Introducing Tark, a browser built around search, privacy, and the Indian web. Today, we are publicly releasing Tark, a new browser from Zynclave Tech, built to work together with Shodhya, our search engine. Tark: gettarka.com Shodhya: shodhya.com Tark is open source, so the browser’s code is publicly available for developers to inspect, understand and contribute to. For a long time, the web experience has essentially looked like this: Browser → Search Engine → Web The browser and search engine are usually built by completely different companies. We wanted to experiment with something different: Tark → Shodhya → Web Tark is our browser layer. Shodhya is our search layer. Together, they give us the ability to work on the entire discovery experience rather than simply putting another search box inside an existing browser. Why Tark? Tark is built on Chromium, with unnecessary Google dependencies removed. It supports Chrome extensions and provides a familiar browsing experience while giving us the freedom to build our own features on top of the browser. But the browser is only one part of what we are building. Search is at the center. Tark comes with Shodhya as its integrated search experience. We are building Shodhya to understand the way people actually search, including queries across Indian languages, transliteration, entities, facts, websites and increasingly complex questions. We are also experimenting with features designed specifically for the Indian web. Tark includes Indian language transliteration directly in the address bar, allowing users to work with Indian scripts while typing naturally. We are also integrating Indian services and resources into the browsing experience, including platforms such as Indian Kanoon, IRCTC and the National Portal of India. Privacy is another important part of Tark. Tark does not require an account. There is no mandatory sync. No Google account is required. We are deliberately keeping the browser independent from unnecessary Google services. Tark is built on ungoogled-chromium. This is an early release. There will be bugs. There will be things that do not work perfectly. There will be features that need to be redesigned. That is expected. We are releasing it publicly because we want to build this in the open and learn from people actually using it. Why build both a browser and a search engine? We do not want to build just another browser. We also do not want to build just another search engine. The interesting opportunity is at the intersection of both. When the browser and search engine are designed together, we can experiment with different ways of discovering and interacting with information on the web. Search can understand the browser experience. The browser can understand how search should work. That is the long-term experiment behind Tark and Shodhya. Today, Tark is available for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later. We will continue working on search quality, Indian language support, ranking and relevance, browser performance, privacy, AI-assisted search, web indexing, developer tooling and eventually cross-platform support. We are a small team, and a lot of this has been built from the ground up. If you try Tark and find something broken, tell us. If you have an idea, tell us. If you think we are approaching something the wrong way, tell us that too. The goal is not to pretend that we have already solved search. The goal is to build something worth using. Tark is now public. gettarka.com Shodhya shodhya.com Built by Zynclave Tech.
