Every Indian Should Know about this
What we were taught is that the E = mc^2 was developed by Albert Einstein.
This is true but the reality is little different.
Swami Vivekananda and Nikola Tesla were trying to bridge the gap between the Vedas and modern science.
Albert Einstein completed the work they both started, but the entire credit is given only to Einstein in our textbooks today and the young generation feels like everything is invented and discovered by a white man only.
Anyway,
The Sequence of events :
1. Vivekananda’s Meeting and High Hopes for Tesla
The Letter: Late in 1895, Swami Vivekananda wrote to an English friend stating that Nikola Tesla believed he could mathematically prove that matter and force can be reduced to energy.
Bridging Science and Spirituality: Vivekananda planned to visit Tesla the following week to see this mathematical proof. He believed that if Tesla succeeded, the ancient cosmological worldview of Vedanta (Indian philosophy) would be firmly validated by modern science. He saw a natural connection between modern physics and Vedantic cosmology.
Matching Sanskrit Terms to Physics
Translation of Concepts: Vivekananda used the English words “force” and “matter” to describe the Sanskrit concepts of Prana and Akasha.
Tesla’s Interpretation: Tesla adopted these Sanskrit terms and understood them in physical terms as energy and mass.
Note on Terminology: The author notes that back in Vivekananda's era, English dictionaries often blurred the line between "force" and "energy," but energy is the more accurate scientific translation for Prana.
3. Why Tesla Failed and How Einstein Finished It
Tesla’s Concept: Tesla tried to mathematically prove the relationship between mass and energy, but he was unable to solve it. The text notes that Tesla mistakenly thought mass decreases as speed increases, and viewed mass and energy as things that could convert back and forth rather than being fundamentally identical.
The Resolution: Because Tesla couldn't provide the mathematical proof, the scientific bridge Vivekananda hoped for did not happen at that time.
Einstein’s Equation: The true mathematical solution to mass-energy equivalence (E = mc^2) was published ten years later by Albert Einstein.
However, by that time, Swami Vivekananda had already passed away (in 1902), delaying the formal unification between these scientific and philosophical frameworks.
1902 is only 125 years ago roughly.
