The US has suspended eight companies from the Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) programme, the first step most employers must clear to sponsor a foreign worker for an employment-based green card. The companies named are Indian IT majors TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech and Cognizant, US firms Microsoft and Adobe, and France's Capgemini. Vice President JD Vance and Labour Secretary Keith Sonderling said no new or pending PERM applications involving these companies would be accepted or processed, alleging fraud and the undercutting of American workers' wages. Existing H-1B visas are not cancelled, but the suspension delays a common route to permanent residency for thousands of Indian professionals, who already face a large green card backlog. The same announcement also opened investigations into nine universities over their use of J-1 exchange visas.
