Five Belgian students from UCLL (University College Leuven-Limburg) developed CHECK-IT (also referred to in some reports as Drinkey), a drinking straw featuring a built-in test strip. It changes color within seconds when it detects common date-rape and drink-spiking drugs like GHB or ketamine.
How the Invention Works
▫️Built-in strip: A small chemical test strip is integrated directly into the body of the straw.
▫️Fast reaction: The strip changes color in seconds upon contact with specific substances.
▫️Target drugs: Designed to flag hard-to-notice substances like GHB and ketamine before a person takes another sip.
Important Safety Limitations
▫️Not foolproof: Experts and the student inventors note that no test strip can guarantee absolute safety or catch every chemical variant.
▫️Supplemental tool: It is meant to be used alongside standard safety measures rather than replacing them.
▫️Best practices: People should still avoid leaving drinks unattended, stay with trusted companions, and get help immediately if a beverage tastes or feels unusual.
