🐿️A rare Indian Giant Flying Squirrel recently made a surprise appearance in the Ramnagar forest division of Uttarakhand. The elusive, nocturnal mammal wandered into a local villager's home and was safely rescued by the Forest Department before being released back into the wild.
🐿️This marks the first recorded sighting of the species in the area in nearly 12 years. Sightings of these mammals are quite unusual because they are primarily active at night and rarely venture close to human settlements.
🐿️While commonly referred to as a "flying" squirrel, the animal doesn't actually fly. Instead, it relies on a special skin membrane stretched between its legs—called a patagium—to glide effortlessly from tree to tree. Thanks to this biological adaptation, they can glide distances of up to 60 to 80 meters in a single stretch.
